I was cleaning out another barn of mine today, and found a 1200 round case of 7.62x39 still in the wood case from Norinco I must have stuck in there years ago.....

What's it worth on today's market ?

Good question, I have two such cases opened with a few boxes missing that I bought in the Clinton era. One says Norinco, the other something else from China (can't remember name) packed exactly the same as the Norinco. I was paranoid about "liberals" back then. Guess I should go shoot more often.
I wonder how long such ammo lasts.

I have two of those big wooden crates 0f 7.62x39 (1000 Rounds ea I think) that are made to be stackable in the back of a truck.... I have no idea what the Brand is; all the test looks like russion crylic (SP) symbols... I bought like 6 of them one or two at a time over several months for like 89.00 ea... That had to be more than 5 years ago....

A few months ago I went out and blew off a few hundred rounds did not have any mis/no fires... There were a few that the recoil and pop did not feel and sounds as HOT as the others...

I've shot Korean made stuff from the 50's-60's with no problem. Keep dry, I'd say the stuff is good about indefinitely....if not, I'm gonna have a heck of a disposal problem....ahahahahaaa

I bought about 1200 rounds of KA headstamped Korean ammo. Shot about 20 rounds of it just to see what it was like. It had less kick than my newer stuff and I had 4 or 5 no fires. It was 70's production, I got it from sportsmans guide. Usually really like them guys.

By the way, you might find this link helpful, it's a listing of head stamp codes and the manufacturers who make them.

124gr is heavy for Wolf fmj. What kind of bullet is stuck in that military classic ammo? The 122gr had a ginormous airspace in the tip of the bullet that yields a nice tumbling effect in soft targets.

Andy, My friendly gun shop in town has Wolf FMJ ammo in plastic-wrapped packs of 500 for 92 FRN's plus taxes, title, registration, insurance, shipping, handling, delivery costs, lunch costs, and the small additional duty due payable for being allowed to pay their prices... totals up to a leg, 2 fingers (or a testicle, your choice), and 105 or so FRN's. That's ammo in 20 round boxes, in plastic. :bandit:

In a box or battle pack like yours, maybe 225 FRN's for 1200.

Glad I bought "enough" back when I still could.

Paper trail is for..?

I've got kin in Yavapai County and have been to J & G before.

Try to go in and buy 1K rounds of rifle ammo. Pay with cash. Then, ask them why you have to show your DL and SIGN a receipt with your name and home address on it. I wonder what that's for?

NO thank you, J & G Sales!

I have used ammo that was over 70 years old, with no problem. As long as it has been kept well sealed in its storage can or Military chest. The worst I ever used was 7.35 Carcano ammo from the 1920 era, and I got about 1 out of 3 as a misfire.

POWDER does have a long shelf life. IF stored properly.

I've fired 50 year old ammo with no problems. And I've fired 50 year old ammo that was scary. Again, I would say it depends on how it was stored during it's life.

Hey, I've fired two or three year old ammo that didn't function properly.

Went bang, but just barely. So manufacturer is important.

And I DOUBT any ammo manufacturer expects their ammo to last 50 years, but it does happen.

I've hand loaded stuff and let it sit for up to five years. Still goes boom.

Hey, Andy. About that 7.62x39? Whadda ya want for it? Or are you gonna just shoot it? I might be interested for a FAIR price. Fair being in the eyes of the beholder. My idea of fair is you make something. I get a good deal, kind of. SO, how much for 1200 rounds? And then we gotta add s&h.

I need to take this back, I was out shooting my remington 710 with a friend and I was getting an awful lot of duds. He asked for some of the rounds that would not fire. Everyone of them fired in his semi-auto 30-06. Some of them actually fired through my 710 on the second try.

Apparently my firing pin is not hitting hard enough. Has anyone encountered this problem and know of a fix. I am a bit of a novice when it comes to guns, but it seems to me I could check the firing pin if that is something I could do myself and check with remington to see if it is a few thousandths short. I'm not sure how to disassemble the bolt, but it looks like it could be done.

i had a chance to fire off some 30-06 that was packaged in the 1920's. it was found in the cupboard of an old falling down homestead.

every one of them fired and was quite accurate too. the outside of the cases was dark green and black with tarnish and corrosion. i was a bit worried about it so i used an old bold gun that wouldn't matter if it blew up.:D i made sure i had goggles and gloves though!!!
